My son is interested in lacrosse because an older kid in our neighborhood plays. My son is 5, I went and bought the cheap starter lacrosse sticks at academy for $25 so he could play with them, they are plastic but have a real net that is adjustable. We are playing with them a lot, but who knows if he’ll still be interested in a month, so I’m not looking to upgrade equipment or anything like that.

I notice throwing with him that the ball tends to hit the top of the stick when throwing and the ball comes out very low.

Is there a way to adjust the net so that doesn’t happen or is less severe? Is there a way to throw so that won’t happen? Is that supposed to happen with lacrosse?

Sorry for the novice question, I know nothing about Lacrosse.

You can tighten/loosen the strings to get the proper delivery.

When i played I found a sweet spot where the top of the ball was just above the sidewall when sitting in the lowest part of the pocket.

We learned to throw by spending 100's of ours in front of a brick wall.

Just like a baseball swing, everyone is going to have a slightly different approach.

RIP KARL MITCHELL!

Thanks

So another question since you seem to be knowledgeable. To stop it from hitting the top of the stick should I tighten the pocket and the part of the net towards the top?

There are 3 shoelace like strings running through for tightening. One at the bottom, one in an inverted U at the top of the pocket, and one the runs horizontally across the net towards the top.

The pocket is probably too deep from what you are stating. When the pocket gets too deep the ball tends to get to the top of the head and it causes a sttep pitch downward in the throw/shot. If you put a ball in the mesh and turn the stick sideways, there should be no visual clearance between the top of the ball and the bottom frame - that is both the check for a "legal" pocket and pretty telling if it is too baggy for effectively learning to throw. The easiest way to shallow out the pocket is to tighen the bottom string or even move it up a diamond row or two. If that doesn't work you may need to restring the sidewalls. Plenty of good videos on youtube to teach you more, check out ECD Lacrosse on there. For what it's worth, if he is going to play at that age the biggest thing is to be able to scoop the ball off the ground while running. Don't let him rake the ball backwards to scoop it, make him drop his backhand low and scoop as though he is shovleing rocks off a driveway - thin. None of the kids will be cathcing or throwing all that well til the 7-8 yr old division at earliest

Yea I learned catching was not going to happen pretty quick

He was having fun chasing the ball down trying to scoop it up. I told him to scoop under fast and low like he does with a spatula when he is flipping a pancake, seems to be kind of getting the hang of it

Thank you for the help

There are tons of stringing videos on YouTube. I would look at Powlax videos on YT to get the basic throwing and catching motions. Get that stick strung right or he’ll quit anyways. That’s the biggest reason kids quit, they have a poorly strung stick. If he’s playing with an older kid, they might know someone who can string it for him instead.

Well right now he’s playing with me and we are just messing around having fun he’s not really trying to compete or anything. But yes I will figure out how to string it to help him out. Then if he really likes it I’ll look I to getting him better equipment down the road. I just want to encourage him to explore different sports and find what he likes, I think Lacrosse could be something he’s good at, but he’s 5 so who knows.

I’m not an idiot when it comes to sports in general, but I am an idiot when it comes to lacrosse

Serious question because they use different sticks, do you have a boys stick or a girls stick?

Once again, he is 5, I got the cheap plastic beginner stick from Academy. If Lacrosse seriously has different sticks for boys and girls at 5yrs old, that’s a lacrosse problem the sport needs to address.

Here is a picture I found online.

That’s a guys stick. Girls have a shallow pocket. I hear you on being young. We have a K1 program that our seniors run through n Saturday mornings to teach the little ones how to play. There might be a TryLax program near you as well.

We will see if he keeps an interest and then I’ll look for actual camps or leagues. Is TryLax the best program?

It's just something US Lacrosse does for kids who are interested to see if they'd like to play lacrosse. It's like a recruiting tool for them.

This is very common, especially with new sticks. This article can likely help:

You can also buy an inexpensive stick but nice stick like an STX complete for $50 and cut the shaft very short so he can easily handle it. My daughter has used this stick during practice (they use boys sticks for small goal/tennis ball drills/3x) for years.

There is an enormous difference in boys and girls sticks btw. There isn’t as much difference between a men’s $50 stick vs $300 compared to girls. For girls, it’s a $300 Gait stick or nothing.

I knew nothing about lacrosse a few years ago. Its an amazing sport.

We called that whip, if you're shooting you want more, but if you're D you want less so you can crank the long passes.

100% head over ball and scoop through. If he can get this down and a small adjustment to his shot he will be light years above 90% of the players.

I didn't start playing until my sophomore year of HS but it was the most fun 3 years of sports for me.

Outside of putting the ball in the goal, Men's and Women's Lacrosse are 2 totally different sports.

I’ll look into this if lacrosse is something that sticks, I’m hoping it is because it seems like a fun sport.

I tightened the netting pretty much as tight as I could at the top and bottom, seems to make it easier to throw. The pocket is not nearly as deep now but like y’all said he’s just scooping the ball off the ground right now so he doesn’t need a deep pocket
