Public Service Announcement - Yes, Potatoes Can Explode

Recipes for baked potatoes always say to poke holes in them pre-baking to keep them from exploding. I saw this as an "old wives tale." I have been baking potatoes for decades without poking them and never had a problem.
Well, now I have. I was grilling some ribs on the Traeger and tossed a couple of potatoes in with them. After they got soft I moved them to a cutting board I was carrying.
Suddenly there was a very loud pop as the center of one of the potatoes basically disintegrated. There were bits of shattered potato covering the board, my arm, the grill and the floor. The force of the explosion blew the other potato off the board and it hit the ground and broke open.
Lesson learned, I guess.

other foods that can explode:
reheated brisket in the microwave
boiled eggs if you let them boil too long

I'm fine, but I am glad I wasn't looking at the potato when it decided to go Kabloom.
Thanks for asking.

I recently read a recipe where they mentioned that poking holes was up to you; they had cooked scores without poking or an explosion.
Based on your experience, I’m gonna poke.

Best way to bake a russett imo
Wash and scrub it
Dry it
Poke several small holes
Lather it with olive oil
425 for an hour

I had the same experience recently. My husband always pokes if he cooks them, I do not. Cleaning an exploded potato out of the oven is zero fun so I am now on team poke the potatoes.
