The hate stems from societal stigma around obesity and psychological conditioning to believe obesity is strictly an issue of lacking will power. This has fueled a culture of fat shaming(which actually has made it harder to fight the disease large scale). It’s due to internalization and feeling a certain way about themselves and inadequacies. Then they lash out a spit venom. Very standard projection.
The GLP-1s are accomplishing something that all the fad diets, “move more eat less” campaigns, and societal fat shaming couldn’t accomplish. Broad scale success in fighting the disease of obesity.
Let me put it another way. It is providing more years of life to those that take it. It is improving the quality of life of those that take it. It lowers other risk factors like the linked article discussed. It hurts nobody else, which is amazing considering how triggered so many people get over this.
What is even more amazing is that it appears to help break many addiction chains due to how the reward center in the brain responds. Gambling. Alcoholism. Smoking. Nail biting. And so on.
You would think this is something everyone could get behind, but sadly no. Our society is still largely driven by antiquated thinking.

Yeah I don’t get the vitriol. I am not taking these meds nor will I likely ever have to. If it’s helping someone get a jumpstart on being healthy I’m not going to sit here on my throne of adequate daily activity and diet and throw stones. The inherent need to be right and better than on the internet is a fricking plague.

Not so fast buddy. These magic drugs haven’t been around long enough to prove this or the opposite.

People have emotional reactions to fat people that I would guess are rooted in evolution. Fat people might be perceived to be selfish and lazy and therefore a threat to the tribe.
I appreciate your overall sentiment but at 50yo I’ve lived long enough to have learned that there is no magic pill. There will be a massive side effect to these drugs. And if history is any guide it will likely come just after the drug companies have recouped their investment plus a few billion more and the subsequent lawsuits will be a few billion less than the profits.
