That is awesome.

However, I'm shocked that the entire island, much less either church building, hasn't been burned up during this tradition at least once.

Oh, I guarantee you that the origins of this are probably not as benign as it is now. As the grandson of Greek Orthodox types. Grudges amongst the Greeks over religion run deep.....very deep. I'm guessing this started out centuries ago about some theological dispute among the priests.
