I've been known to skip out on an in-law event to do projects around the house... I don't have a bad relationship with them but it is a bit draining to be in someone elses house for a whole day or weekend and further, driving to get there. It's about having a mental recharge before another work... as a family man you won't always get that, but it's pretty reasonable to not want the same group of people to suck up multiple weekends in a row
