re: Looking like Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan won't run in the Preakness

Get what money now? A stud deal? If he retired off that derby win he’d be in South Korea or turkey in 2 years.
I like the horse but I’m not scrambling to breed to a goldencents out of a colonel John mare. I’d just got to goldencents himself. He stood for only $10,000 this year and the market just at spendthrift is flooded with into mischiefs. . I don’t think they’d up his fee a crazy amount from that.

I miss the Visa triple crown challenge. $1 million to whichever horse gets the most points in the 3 races, $5 million if there had been a triple crown.
Bring that back and we’ll see more run in all 3.
That would be cool to see again. Would definitely make it more fun to follow all 3 races, even without the threat of a Triple Crown winner.

He doesn’t have a chance in the Preakness. He was damn lucky to win the derby. Absolutely perfect rail saving ride by the jockey and if that race were one inch longer he was losing.
Great story. And I love the trainer.
Unfortunately Baffert is going to dominate the Preakness.

Always takes away from the interest a little.
There was little to no interest in the Kentucky Derby until a day before the race (You can guess why). NBC didn't even start airing promos until the week before.

You have to look after the stud fees from the animal first.
One of the first things I said to the wife when I saw who won. Stud fees will go up exponentially now that he's won the Kentucky Derby.
Too bad if they don't run the horse in either of the next 2. If not running the Preakness, what's the chances of running at Belmont-----and what's the use really????

Not necessarily. See my post above about stud deals.
Also, he went to the track today and his appetite is back. He’s not out of the Preakness, he’s a maybe.

Update from yesterday:
quote:
Trainer Kenny McPeek cast doubt on Mystik Dan being locked into the Preakness, understandably saying it'll be up to how the horse is feeling as to whether or not it will compete, via the Louisville Courier Journal:
"We're not committed to the Preakness. No, not yet," McPeek said on Sunday. "We'll just watch him over the next week. It will be one of those where we'll probably take (the decision) up to the last minute. … We'll let him tell us. If he's not in the feed tub, he won't run."

Which is what I said…
He’s a maybe.

Lucky how? The best horse doesn't necessarily win races, it's the best trip by the jock. They had a plan, and it worked. Looked to me about 16 others didn't belong whatsoever, except on paper. A win is a win whether it's by a nose hair, or a country mile. This year's crop of 3 year old colts, is not eye catching.

The posters in this thread appear to be very knowledgeable about these races.
The KD sets a limit of 3 year old horses and there have been a couple of B2B jockey winners but I’m curious if any horses have won it B2B. Anyone know?

Secretariat's winged victory at the Belmont.
That Belmont was the greatest sports achievement in history. Secretariat’s quarter miles were faster than the previous one. It’s a shame that the only video from that is so poor.

If I’m understanding your question correctly, you’re asking if a horse won the Kentucky derby one year and then the same horse won the following year, then no. Only three year olds race each year at the derby.

bullshite, they know they easily lose the next one. Probably place 5th. Luckiest winner in a long time. The second place horse was hindered the entire stretch. Can't believe 3rd place stood.

wy, justify gets an * on his triple crown, and not just because he didn’t actually qualify for the derby. That Belmont was one of the most rigged races I’ve seen outside Louisiana. And not just then instilled regard interference, there were lots of horses not entered and equipment changes made with horses of slightly common ownership groups
I honestly had never heard of this until your post. Wow. That is some Louisiana Downs type stuff I never viewed him on American Pharoah's level but this does bump him down a bit. Dang.

Barbaro doesn't break down, there was no doubt in my mind he would've won the TC. He was an absolute monster, that was trained by a legit horseman. I still believe to this day the vet should've scratched him after breaking loose from the gate in the Preakness. Many rumors swirled that he injured himself
Smarty Jones was the sad one to me. He had the TC won but the jockey stopped whipping him/started to coast. The jockey even said afterwards that he thought he had the race won so he didn't push him as hard on the final stretch. Once he realized he was being caught up to it was too late to get Smarty back up to speed. Heartbreaking because he would have been the first to break the no winner streak. That was a special horse that gets forgotten about because of the jockey.
Imagine being on the final home stretch of the triple crown and you don't push the horse all the way

I was never old enough to see Secretariat, he died a year before I was born lol. Watching his sportscentury though was amazingly awe inspiring. He really was something else.
It's an incredible story. One of my favorites in all of sports. I seriously still get the chills when I watch instagram/tik tok videos of his races.

The unfortunate thing was that the runner up Sham in all 3 races was a record setter himself and would have won a triple crown probably if he wasn't up again Secretariat.
1. Still has the fastest time ever at the Santa Anita.
2. 2nd fastest Kentucky Derby time ever
2. One of the fastest (top 5 I think) in the Preakness ever.
That horse was special. It's funny you mentioned that because the day of the Kentucky Derby I was talking to my wife about Secretariat and told her that I felt bad that Shams had to go against him because he was probably one of the greatest race horses ever and he didn't win any of the big three.
He actually finished last in the Belmont though. He was head to head with Secretariat for probably 3/4 of the race (which in itself was incredible) going at a record pace but he just couldn't keep up. That's when the Secretariat is running "like a tremendous machine" line came in from the announcer. The jockey actually let up on Sham and just kind of trotted to the finish.

Plus, he was never a sound horse. He’s passing on speed. I hope he’s not passing on his issues…
Dan is confirmed for the Preakness!
Also, I think it was more evangeline type stuff than LAD

Dan was named after me....at least that's what I tell myself.
