We were on a fall foliage road trip in northern Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota last fall and decided to go to ND and Theodore Rosevelt NP. Neither my wife nor I had been to ND. TRNP struck me as a poor man's Badlands NP in SD. I'm glad we went but wouldn't drive across ND again to see it.

There is a north unit and a south unit. There is also a 3rd unit but the ranger said it wasn't worth the time to go there and IIRC the road was not paved.

We stayed in Dickinson, ND which was nice town. Got in late in the day and drove to TRNP the next morning. We had a good meal at Blue 42 Sports Grille & Bar; it was Sunday evening and some NFL games were on.

The southwest corner of ND is in the Mountain Time Zone and the rest of the state is in the Central TZ. The north unit is Central, the south unit is Mountain.

We drove to the north unit first and the visitor center is about an hour from Dickinson. It is in and out, 14 miles one way.

The north unit is where we saw bison and big horn sheep. The bison seemed more calm than those in YS; maybe we were in YS during the rut.

The south unit is a loop road but the last 6 miles were under construction when we there and we had to turn around and go back the way we came. I think we turned around near the Ridgeline Trail. Mostly we saw prarrie dogs in the south unit.

We were there Oct 22, 2023 and Medora had pretty much shut down.

This sign was on a store across from the Cowboy Museum. I don't know if the museum was open.

A couple of pieces of artwork outside the museum.

Based on the feedback above, I opted for going to Fargo over Labor Day weekend. I know there's no home football games but will plan on brewery hopping and exploring things around Fargo for checking off ND
