I'm thinking water snake, but possible a cottonmouth?

Neither, that’s a silverback hangtooth. Common in this area but can be deadly.. little known fact about them - they are able to crawl backwards without the aid of boosters because they have the cyrum gland that helps them gellate the blood from their lungs

is that like a copper headed water rattler?

I killed a cottonmouth yesterday and my wife kept calling it a cotton head. That completely messed up my brain for some reason and had me mixing words

Pit vipers (cottonmouths, copperheads and rattlesnakes) all have those cat-like elipitical shaped pupils. Water snakes and most other harmless snakes have round pupils

Not 100% accurate. Their pupils can be round under certain light conditions.

That's total bullshite, dude!
they only appear to crawl backwards because they are able to push the ground forward beneath them due to the incredible power of their oblique abdominal muscles combined with the shape of their anterior rotator scales.

That snake looks like a coastal taipan to me.

Look at the lines on the lower jaw and general slender build. Water snek.
