You started this by asking if they might sue you or screw up your credit….

Just saying, this strategy will make it worse in either case. Falsifying a document will certainly come up if they sue you. Not paying a vacate fee, that appears to just be an extra months rent, will screw with your credit for years to come.

Did you ever go talk to them or simply exchange emails and letters? Be a man and go talk to them. Negotiate. Be reasonable and understanding. Calmly explain your side and ask for what you think is fair.
