Bama is particularly good at it. They gamed the system to shoot up in rankings and that accompanied the very real appeal of being awesome at football and greek life for a long time. They used those things and manipulation of US News metrics to boost their student profile and pump in money, which in turn is resulting in legit, serious upgrades.

That game has caught up with them and they've slipped back a fair amount, but there are some real improvements that should linger.

UA is pretty much done growing at the undergraduate level. They have now turned to the graduate programs in the push to generate more grant revenue. So far it is working, but I fear they are putting the cart before the horse. At places like Michigan and Texas, they genuinely value research and knowledge generation, and the massive amounts of grant funding they receive are a byproduct of that. At UA, they seem to care about grant funding over all else. They don't give a frick about what faculty research so long as it brings in money.

It is working, but it isn't exactly the most intellectual approach. IDK -- that institution is not for everyone.
