The problem was that Russian leaders were under tremendous pressure to demonstrate to the world that communism was better than capitalism and that the whole world should join them. Long before WWII they were driven by false messages and propaganda about how great they were doing. That's why after WWII they taught school children that 'the allies' did not win WWII. The Russians won it.
There were some Americans in govt who agreed with them about communism (McCarthy was right). But there were lots of people in US govt and our military that wanted as little to do with them as possible because they knew Russia couldn't be trusted.

Like Patton. Who literally lobbied for us to take the captured German troops and attack Russia and put an end to communism.
