The comic book fanboys that can only view these two movies in relation to other superhero movies and not in isolation will be disappointed again. People who are sick of the prequel/sequel/universe comic movies will be able to enjoy it. I don't care if this Joker ever tangles with Batman or Robin or starts a series of 10 movies. Do something original and entertain me for 1.5 hours like the first one did.

First, if you aren't a comic book nerd then literally every Joker film will be original to you. So why not tell one of the other Batman/Joker tied stories? There sre some great ones.
Second, again, if the point is not to connect it to anything, then why connect it to anything?
This is the Prometheus problem all over again.
