However, the main point I'm keyed in on, is the "every now and then."

Okay, one time bite we can work with him, but getting regularly bit more than 1 time, if that's what you mean, is unacceptable. Under no circumstances will my dog bite me more than once and it's hunky-dory, ho-hum. Either he's a problem, or I'm doing something really dumb to illicit that response, or both.

A dog prone to biting its owner, especially without major provocation, should be bred out of every gene pool of every breed.

I actually prefer males for bird dogs because of their drive and independence. Once broken, which is not a one-and-done occurrence, they will part the waters when they hit it, my male upland bird dogs are hard headed sum bitches, but they won't quit. My house dog, I much prefer a female.
