Just think of it as bracing. A suit helps to keep everything in place, especially your innards, and allows you to strain/put more force without fear of causing problems. It braces/supports the core. With a squat it can also give you more pop off the bottom of the lift. For a heavy squat the knees are the big worry, though, which is why so much thought and time is put into the wraps.
