Why haven't we been better this year?

Coming into the year, with the great offseason moves (or so we thought) I, as many fans, had high expectations for this year. What exactly was the overall problem? I feel as if the defense never got it together and our offense was not consistent at all. It's so frustrating. Hopefully next year we'll get it together, until then, another year without a Saints playoff

5 games lost by 5 points or less.
As the old saying goes:
Big Losses = Talent Evaluation
Close Losses = Coaching

We had some significant injuries, as well as some players coming of of season ending injuries from last year.

Hard to pick which one leads but I'd say coaching, and then injuries... Please fire Gibbs!

I think talent-wise we are better but we shot ourselves in the foot so many times this season.

playcalling on 3rd and short and playcalling in trying to close out games

Three seasons of off-season promises about an imporved defense have not come to pass. Someone should face consequences for that.

To me, seriously... I think it was all about a couple of boneheaded play calls and some missed field goals.
I think that's the difference between about 3 or 4 games lost and 3 or 4 games won.
The Saints really aren't a bad team at all. They're the best .500 team I've ever seen.
The defense doesn't alter opposing the opposing offense's game plan at all, and rarely forces turnovers. That's my only real gripe.

Injuries, Gibbs, and Gramatica

I agree with you. They should have won at least 2 more games for sure. You're talking 10-6 even with a ridiculously bad defense.
The D-ends and safety play (and some bad playcalling in key situations) has kept this team from the playoffs again.

Our big names that brought all the hype just didn't produce...except Brees & Vilma of course.
Colston - underachieved
Bush - great, til he got hurt
Shockey - took 12 weeks to begin to produce
Fujita - underachieved in the shadow of Vilma
Meachem - noone expected him to be great, but we expected something.
Deuce - I would like to say that if he would have gotten the bulk of the carries that he would been great, but we just don't know.
Defense - sadly to say, parred the course.

We've had so many injuries, I hear Benson is springing for an ICU next door to the facilities.

Injuries, Gramatica, not running Deuce on 3rd and 1.

Coaching, kicking, injuries, defensive pressure and secondary play* (until of late, which I think they have actually played better).

i think we set the record for injuries this year, but we STILL should have made the playoffs

Because we'll be better next year. And next year we'll be better the year after that.
How long have you been watching the Saints???
