I will just never understand how you can get that complacent. That's vehicular homicide level negligence on the part of the captain.

It’s hard for me to believe that they hit the actual rig. With radar you’d almost have to try to hit it.
If they hit a wellhead that would make more sense. Some of those things barely show up on radar if at all, and there are a decent amount that are unlit. Not much you can do when they’re barely above the waterline and not lit up like they should be

No telling what happened. A boat like that probably has autopilot. Smooth seas, autopilot, low visibility, radar or heading sensor malfunction. I could easily see it happening. Or maybe they got tossed well before that with no kill switch and the boat just went found the rig on its own? Maybe they lost engine control?
We don't know anything right now. With how many people are out there running big boats piss drunk with no idea what they're doing (by no means accusing these guys whom i dont know of that), I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. Go out of grand isle on a Saturday in snapper season and keep the radio on 16. You'll hear of somebody in a bind more often than not.

Collected some downvotes, but I'm more confident in this statement now than I was then.
