Get a STEM or business degree, then do a quick teacher certification program if you want to teach. If you decide teaching is not for you, you've got a much more marketable degree to fall back on

From what I have seen, most people who go alt cert are out of teaching in 5 years, if not sooner.

The only people who seem to survive that track are the ones that really thought about education as a degree, but for some other reason were talked out of it.

I had a friend like that. Should have been a teacher all along. Got a business degree because the teachers in his family told him to stay out of education. Went back and got alt cert a few years later. Dude is an amazing math teacher. Few years later went and got his masters and is now in administration.

But by and large, the alt cert programs don't teach you enough about running a classroom, dealing with students and parents, admin BS, etc, so people get frustrated and wash out.

This is true, but it's not as big a difference from education majors as you would think.

67.5% of Texas teachers who get college degrees in teaching will stay at a public school for more than five years.

60.6% of alternatively certified teachers who work at traditional public schools stay longer than five years.

I think the reality of teaching versus the picture people have in their mind when they decide to become teachers hits hard once you are in the classroom.
