I heard a clip from some writer on the film saying "they wanted to make the film accessible" instead of "a Catholic movie"... so that's why they might've washed away her faith. It's the world that Hollywood lives in, that Christianity is taboo. As Kurt Vonnegut said, "so it goes."

I really enjoyed the movie though it was a little bit of a let down how little they mentioned about Catholicism/their faith.
