The everyone’s happy when Mark gets aboard scene was also directly referenced in the book as a joke for when they made a movie about his story. And that’s exactly what happens in the movie.
The only problem I had with the movie is they ignore Mark being a mechanical engineer with his secondary specialty as botany. He does some pretty advanced stuff for a plant guy especially with the pathfinder programming. That’s nitpicking thought

I can forgive everything, even cutting out the tension of the dust storm during his trek across Mars, because they did this scene from the book:
