re: Garand Thumb stress tested a PSA Freedom Rifle and the barrel finally died at 6k rounds...

It was shooting over 4 moa. I think the barrel life for an M4 is supposed to be higher than 6000. The NGSW fires a higher pressure round. Obviously the barrel life would be shorter.

6k for the M4, 12k for the M4A1. Especially with M855A1.

did y'all catch the gas system comment?
Mike (GT): the shorter the barrel, the harder it is on parts.
Phil: well, not necessarily. it's the shorter the gas system.
Mike (GT): :pointsatnerd: oh interesting. shorter the gas system. thanks, Asian Phil.
Phil: you're welcome, White Mike.

YouTubes
lots of info in this one and i might've gotten some of it wrong, but:
barrel groupings lost milspec MOA just over 6k rounds.
bolt extractor began to wear out around 5k rounds.
a full-auto was used to expedite the round count, but not in the form of a "burn-down" that most Gun Tubers do. towards the end of the video, GT mentions that it was 3 mags and cooled. you can see his pants change throughout the video so it was done over the course of a few days.
stock gas tube and gas block survived the test, but the tube was worn.
they had a guy from BEXAR ARMs come out and run spec tests on the BCG and barrel after the test.
- BCG was surprising still within spec although the top rails were worn significantly as it rode only the top of the receiver.
- barrel chamber had some serious machining marks.
- gas port was a bit worn mainly due to full-auto
"i would suggest this rifle for someone that isn't serious about shooting. If you want a duty grade weapon at the lowest price point, I suggest BCM. "
i wasn't expecting that response.

Well that's me then. I bought one 5 years ago and I bet I haven't put 500 rounds through it. 5,500 to go. It will last through my lifetime
Sorry bro. If someone breaks into your house you're going to die.

Too many people.
I have a new tungsten disulfide powder i mix in to my moly grease. Apply a light coating and then cycle the weapon... A lot.
The powder isn't easily removed (understatement, it's impossible). A few applications in and I run a few guns basically dry.

The edits are deceiving. They said they basically ran 3 mags, then cooled to ambient temp (30-40 degrees F) then tested and continued firing again. They also did lube a little bit every couple thousand rounds.
I think their main criticism of the barrel was that they expect combat grade hard chrome-lined barrels from FN, Colt, etc to go around 12-15K before they started to lose their accuracy that badly.

Was suppressed also which accelerates wear. I don't own any PSAs but they replace the barrel I hear if you shoot it out. So for a training gun hard to beat and even if not pretty good.

Their Freedom line is all (almost all?) nitride finish, not chrome. Nitride is excellent for normal shooting, as holding dimensions is easier and when done properly it's a tiny bit harder than chrome. Chrome-lined shines during heat/full auto hard use, and it's used for machine gun barrels for that reason. I know they let it cool but nobody should use a nitride barrel for repeated suppressed mag dumps.
If this was an AR used to hunt hogs you'd get a lot more mileage out of the barrel, it's just not designed for how they used it.

Full auto killed the barrel, too much heat. I'd like to how long it lasted in semi-auto only, which it was built for. Great upper for the money.

Be careful. You'll enrage the GT schlong slurpers.

I just don't get the concern...
AIM Surplus just posted a sale, AERO Precision M4 16" barrels with midlength gas system for $69. If you're thinking you're going to shoot the barrel out, just buy one of these with a gas tube and set it aside. Then when you start getting flyers, swap the barrels out.

GT's videos were more informative when he was just 1on1 with the camera. now he's got Micah and Charlie, and now it's turned into an entertainment channel.
his MK18 video from 2017 shows a dramatic difference in the type of content he creates now.

90% of the population doesnt need duty grade and will never shoot 6k rounds.
