I agree with you. There should be zero reason a working person can’t afford to buy a home or find reasonable rent. They have the right to have a slice of the American dream of homeownership. And close to $1,000, and up, for a standard 1 bedroom is ridiculous. Definitely in Louisiana for that rent. I’m so grateful I own my home.

See my post above about HUD Fair Market Values...

Those numbers just don't set the bar for rents (they don't really do that either, the market does, but they aren't just a reference). Those HUD FMV's determine HUD budgets, govt housing and Sec. 8. The higher those numbers go, the more money each HUD office/region gets put in their coffers.

Therefore, the higher those FMV's, the higher your taxes go. The higher taxes go, the less money goes into the private sector. The less money in the private sector goes, debt rises. As debt rises so does risk. As risk increases, so does interest rates. As interest rates go up, credit scores go down. As credit scores go down, insurance rates go up (along with the values that must be insured).

All this- cost of materials, less capital, higher loan payments, more insurance - all resulting from increased taxes.

So if housing is a right then taxes, SSI, Medicare, property, personal property, registration fees, permits, regulatory filings, etc. all are unconstitutional because they are depriving citizens of their rights... to affordable housing.

You can't have both.

This is a retarded "dream". Most folks are not equipped to own and maintain a property and renting is just a better deal for them in the long run.

Rent is the most you will ever pay for housing and a mortgage is the least.

Why are Americans hyper-obsessed with the concept of homeownership?

Max out your retirement account contributions and buy some index funds if you want to get rich.
