This might shock many, but I think RR was a horrible hire for Michigan. He's a great coach, but he just does not fit in there whatsoever. He's totally out of place. And I think he's pissed off so many fans and alumni it will be hard to win them back. I understand they had to make a splash, but they should have found the best hire for them, not just the biggest name willing to come.

You can include coordinators if you want, but Malleveto count as one.

Meh, his recruiting has allowed for Nutt to take advantage.

On the other hand, OM was STUPID to fire Cutcliffe. That was the real dumb move.
ETA: Ron Zook, Bill Callihan

in hindsight, I could see this. but, these all looked like pretty decent hires at the time.
If I were to focus on bad hires that we knew would be bad hires from day one:
1. Mike Sherman, Texas S&M
2. Ron Zook, f.u. (although he did recruit his butt off)
3. Ed Ogeron, Ole Mess
4. Ron Prince, KSU (a collective 'who?' rose up from the heartland)
5. Baldwin, USL (was that in the last 10 yrs?)
6. Mike Price, Bama (culture clash of epic proportions)
7. Shula, Bama (over his head in epic proportions)
8. Bill Calahan, NU
9. Doba, WSU
10. Chuck Long, SDSU

That's exactly why I threw RR at Michigan in here. Sometimes and in some places, it's about more than coaching.
Look at Pete Carroll- he fits in at USC and in California. But if he were in the SEC, I don't think he would mesh as well.
That's why you always hear the term "Michigan Man". Bo S. set the bar pretty high up there.

+1
Tepper single handedly destroyed promising LSU teams and got Dinardo fired. Amazing work, truly.

1. George O'Leary at Notre Dame
2. Tony Franklin at AU (didn't finish the season, that counts as bad regardless of circumstance)
3. Whoever took over for Petrino at Louisville (program fell off REAL quick)
4. Bill Stewart at WVU (see Louisville hire)
5. Patrick Nix at Miami (sucked at GT, sucks at Miami)
6. Jeff Bowden at FSU
7. Malveto at LSU
8. Bill Callahan at NU
9. O at Ole Miss
10. Robinson at Syracuse
Random order by the way
ETA: These are pretty much the past 5 years b/c that's about as much as I can remember

Can Gene Chizik make the list twice?

If you'd listen to Chezik, he sounds as if he'll be on that board pretty soon.

Former Louisiana-Lafayette coach wins suit over firing
Associated Press
Updated: October 19, 2007, 10:22 AM ET
LAFAYETTE, La. -- The first black head football coach at any major Louisiana university has won a $2 million judgment in a lawsuit claiming that the University of Louisiana at Lafayette fired him because of his race, not because his teams lost 80 percent of their games.
Jurors found that Jerry Baldwin's race wasn't the only reason he lost the job, but was among the reasons. University officials broke his contract and inflicted emotional distress through negligence, according to the jury of six whites and six blacks.
Jurors took nearly 10 hours to work their way through a complicated verdict form.
"There is no substitute for victory," said Baldwin's attorney, G. Karl Bernard. He said Baldwin appreciates the chance to air his grievances.
ULL attorney Steve Oats said the evidence doesn't support the verdict for Baldwin, who was coach from 1999-2001, but he and university officials haven't decided their next step.
"It is clear Jerry Baldwin was not terminated because of his race," Oats said. "Jerry Baldwin was terminated over his tenure. The team had a record of 6-27 and attendance was terrible. The program was not going in the right direction."
In closing arguments for the eight-day trial, Bernard said white coaches before and after Baldwin got new equipment and had a greater ability to market the football program via a coach's television show and through the university's marketing department.
Baldwin worked with used equipment, the marketing director was fired his second year on the job, and he never had a coach's show to promote the football program, Bernard said.
Oats said the same officials now accused of racial discrimination made the first black head coach at a major Louisiana university.
Jurors voted 10-2 to award Baldwin $500,000 for general damages, including emotional distress; $600,000 for past lost wages; $900,000 for future lost wages, and $2,676 for special damages.
The same administration officials now accused of racial discrimination are the same people who gave Baldwin the job as the first black head coach at a major Louisiana university, Oats argued.
He also said there are no signs that Baldwin's ability to get another job in coaching has been hampered by the firing, and Baldwin's attorneys did not present any evidence that he suffered extreme emotional distress.
Oats said Baldwin is now a minister at New Living Word Ministries in Ruston.

Weis wasn't a bad hire when they got him, but that contract extension has to be considered the worst contract ever created and I would put him at #1 because of that

With Croom and Willingham gone, will there be ANY Div I teams with a black head coach? I'm there are a few out there, but I certainly can't think of any.
Oh, and so that we can stay on topic:
1.) Willingham at UW (I didn't think this when they hired him, but to have that kind of record in the Pac 10 is nuckingfuts)
2.) Malleveto
3.) Franklin
4.) Coker
5.) Hal Mumme (NM)
6.) Weis (agree with earlier post that the EXTENSION was what was really bad)
7.) Tepper

Turner Gill. Fairly ironic miss considering the circumstances of the original post.
