Oh I am definitely not against self rule, but there is self rule and micro rule. There are literally populations of 10,000 people or less who want to be their own countries.

But they almost always want someone else to pay.

There are others....

These are mostly harmless stunts and cranks, God bless them, but when they become larger and larger and threaten the state in a non-constitutional way, I don't have a problem with the state saying, take a break. On the other hand, if all is above board, go for it, I suppose.

I don't think Russia has any desire for this, especially if it can find an area with "ethnic Russians" to go claim they're saving.

Guy with a funny mustache took that same approach back in the 30s. Had his share of appeasers in the west too. That turned out swell

Let's not act like there isn't a reasonable line between self-determination and the interest of maintaining a nation-state.

I think many borders are drawn without regard to cultural or tribal boundaries and as a result lead us into unnecessary conflict.

In an enlightened world we should strive to allow the most freedom possible, minimize tyranny and utilize the democratic process rather than coercion to determine boundaries.

The basques in Spain should be allowed to be autonomous. They’ve been victimized for generations even in the modern era while in theory a member of the “enlightened” EU.

Had Quebec voted to leave Canada they should’ve been allowed to.

Otherwise we are simply rationalizing the application of natural law “might makes right” determinations to make subjective calls on who should be free and who should be subjugated.

It’s interesting to see people who value their own freedoms so highly justify other groups being refused theirs.

It’s why I simultaneously oppose the Russian invasion of Ukraine while also believing the eastern region should’ve been allowed to break away democratically.
