Kind of weird that the River Center is where it is except that they originally built the old Centroplex Arena there. Seems like a huge convention center, hotels, etc. could be built out pretty easily where the old Maison Blanche is off Laurel. They could build something far larger out there and it would probably help improve that fairly empty area a bit. I imagine the old department store building could at least be partially repurposed for a convention hall.
I like the idea of having the new Arena either by the Water Campus place or along Nicholson by the track stadium. No idea how they'd fit it on campus without knocking down something else though. I was playing around with the distance calculators on Google yesterday - the newer arenas have a footprint of 450-550 feet, and that doesn't count the retail and hotels they likely want to build next to this place to capture that additional revenue.
