So I made the mistake back at a Christmas buying my 9 yo a Tristar viper G2 youth model 20ga.
The problem with it is the gun is a little front heavy with a 24” barrel and 13” LOP. She can’t hold it up long enough to make a good shot.
It’s a sweet little gun though and she will grow into it. Just not yet. She’s a little bit on the small side of average compared to the other girls in her class at school.
What I’m looking for is another 20ga with a shorter barrel like 22” and a 12” LOP possibly an O/U that she can handle a little better. Not going with a .410 for two reasons. First it is in my opinion an expert’s gun and holds too tight of a pattern for a beginner. Secondly she is not afraid of recoil. she shoots all my rifles and hand guns like a champ.
If anybody has any experience with getting a small frame youth shooter on a shotgun I’d like to know what models y’all put them on to start.

I bought my son the Franchi Affinity Compact.
The gun has been spectacular and this past year I put a full size stock on it.

That being said, she may not be able to hold the Franchi up for long either until she builds her strength. I’ve been a coach in my son’s trap team for the past several years. Kids start in middle school and many 1st year kids struggle holding the gun.
They have to work on it. Every night they’re instructed to do 100 lifts (shouldering the gun and put it down).

If she’s not strong enough to hold it up then a 20ga is going to be too much recoil. Needs a 410. Been there, done that.

I do not recommend going with O/U for that young and small frame as recoil will be more. 20ga auto or pump is way to go.

I grew up with a single shot until 15. The first time I shot a A-5 20ga I never looked back at single shot, recoil was night and day better.
