Should have aborted when lander lost its internal guidance computers. The NASA lidar on board wasn't designed for a guided controlled decent to the surface. Engineering was literally flying blind.

VERY clever indeed. (It's just that there's no "Moon" to land on. OR "space." R&D did their part -- and I commend them )
