re: Anyone Got Any Good Dixie Mafia Stories?

This is fact. I will say though, the terms mob and mafia are thrown around a lot. Neither the Galveston or Dixie group were anything approaching what we think of as The Mafia.
The Galveston "mob" was more of a well run family criminal enterprise that likely had an understanding with more highly organized organization(s). The Dixie Mafia was/is much more similar to a collection of unorganized criminals who happened to cross paths frequently and occasionally worked together to do criminal shite.

Always heard the Dixie Mafia was more dangerous to be involved with than the real deal Italians. The Dixie Mafia didn’t really follow a strict code or rules. It was a half arse organized shite show of criminals and when something went south it was everyman for himself.
That's about right. It was a collection of cousins, uncles, brother in laws and we think we're cousins, and they didn't always get along.
My mother's father was probably the straightest of his family -- and the most successful -- but his house was still shot up twice. For what reason? I don't know. Just some Sand Mountain shite.
They had this huge glass window on the front of a relatively modest house. Glass was a quarter inch thick and throughout most of my life, it had 3 bullet holes through it.
I loved that man, but he was a straight up hustler. And I knew him in his 50s and 60s. I can only imagine what he got up to when he was younger.
Funny story: He was the only man I ever knew that made money on vacation. When my Dad bought our first house on the Gulf, he and my grandmother (the one I inherited the crazy from) would drive down to visit in his 1976 F150 XLT.
This one.
Learned to drive in that thing.
Anyway, he'd stay a week or two to hangout with the kids, but before he would leave he'd go down to the Marina and pack that truck full of shrimp, oysters and bonefish and take it back to the mountain. Sell it for a a 2000% markup and laugh the whole damn way.

I don't disagree, but until Lucky Luciano, the Italian Mafia was a lot like the Dixie Mafia. Just a bunch of hustlers, criminals and outcasts trying to make a buck. He "corporatized" them.

I'd always heard that long-time Huntsville, AL mayor Joe Davis (served from '68-'88) was tied to the mafia. Not sure if it was Dixie or the real deal.

Want something more recent? Look up Mike Blakely of Limestone Co. Everyone from the 80s on knew that man was crooked as a 3 dollar bill, but he stayed in office.

True, and its not like the Dixie guys weren't just as ruthless. The Italians had two huge advantages though. They were all of the same race/lineage/religion and more importantly, they were in a densely populated area.

^^^^Truth
My family moved to Limestone county from Biloxi in '83. When I was barely in my 20's I worked for a man who ran the high stakes poker games in town. Blakely was always there, He had a gambling problem for 50 years and it finally caught up to him. I work with his son.

Fertitta worked for Marcello....answered to him is more accurate Marcello had N.O. and Dallas as well as Houston. Giancana had Chicago and the guys in St Louis and KC answered to him. Trafficante had Miami...all with the blessings of the Commission in NYC

My papaw's brother had a scar on his face where he got whacked by Buford Pusser in a gambling raid north of Corinth. All I got.

I almost got shoot and killed sneaking into my room as a teenager in the 70s. My stepmom’s brother was sleeping in my room as they thought I was spending the night out. I was sneaking in the window so I didn’t wake the dogs and get busted. As I opened the window I heard his pistol click. He was scared shitless.
Anytime he stayed with us was probably because he was in trouble in New Orleans. Oh, he was a made man for Carlos Marcello. They said his grandfather, who was Silician, got off the boat with nothing but a machine gun.

The Sherrys kids were very good friends. . Leslie and my sister were big friends and she used to stay over at my house all the time.
When they were initially killed everyone thought it had something to do with Point Cadet project and Mayor Gerald Blessey. The Thortons and Mob/dixie mob were heavily involved in smuggling etc through Harrison county and the pier was a huge cocaine importing spot. My girlfriends uncle as Sheriff of Harrison Country and he got caught on a runway with a drug plane. He committed suicide after to protect everyone. A lot of this was point cadet project area. They used shrimp and commercial fishing boats to smuggle and airplanes. (JJ Cale allegedly wrote the song on the back deck there. (I used to work there)
Blessy and Margaret hated each other. Their next door neighbor was an FBI agent and the feds really went after Gerald Blessy and when they found out he was innocent they were embarrassed they had spent millions and indicted on some bullshite. But for Boyce Holliman, he would have gone to jail.
Incredibly one the mayors that came after him was actually involved in getting the sherries killed, Pete Halet. I actually rented the house that the Halet Nix paralegal from Mississippi Mud, lived at the time. Sherry LaRue maybe?
The Sherrys kids actually hired a Pi that discovered why they were killed. Nix was running a scam in Angola to raise 500k or so to bribe Gov Edward’s to get him transferred to Mississippi so he could get out. Halets law firm was supposed to be holding the money but apparently Pete spent it and when it came up missing he blamed Sherry to save his own arse. The rest is history.
It’s all in Mississippi Mud.
I don’t know why Frank Corso was killed but it was a big deal. Peter DAngelo was the big murder in my day. I think we was found with his dick in his mouth or something. My experience is that the real mob and Dixie mob worked together and weren’t really rivals. The Dixie mob handled most of the bs around Biloxi etc. The big time smuggling would be both involved unless it was US government. The local cops were all on payroll of Dixie Mob.
Interesting fact, Jackson County is actually under the jurisdiction of the Chicago mob not the New Orleans mob, because of Al Capone. Or it was back then. Conflicts could and did arise over that

There's no such thing as the Dixie Mafia
Posted on 2/23/24 at 6:15 am to KiwiHead
Really 3 guys Marcello,Chief and Gillich. Marcello did not want free agents coming into town doing business and since Gillich was the guy who connected people inside the Dixie Mafia it was on his head.

Yeah the Sherry thing was shady as hell. Halat shows up at the house to find them dead and calls the cops.
Yeah the Mafia would contract at times to the Dixie Mafia but the Corso thing pissed off Marcello because Corso was an acquaintance and Marcello liked him personally. Corso was not mob though and Marcello had a rule about killing civilians. There was no reason to kill him.
