There were renewal fees for decades prior to it becoming free, so I don’t mind it as long as they actually put effort into protecting the ham bands.

The fee has been $15 for 10 years for the past 30 years. GMRS was $75 for 10 years. They made both of them $35 for simplicity and people think they are getting ripped off. We talk on radios and amps that cost thousands of $$. Get over it. You pay more in cell phone fees and driver license and hunting and fishing

Yes, but they don't drive around at random. They focus when one person out there bitches to them about you.

They check on complaints, but they will also stop randomly at a station to make sure it's operating within its footprint, within its class, etc.

so is this what happens? do they REALLY go after unlicensed broadcasters? I heard the HAM community is harder on unlicensed broadcasters than the FCC is.

Not harping on HAMs. Just generally curious as I've got a baofeng and I've configured to listen in around here. never taken the test though.

I don't know too much about HAMs but definitely AM/FM radio stations, I was managing one when an agent came by. This was back in the early 90s, even then they had a setup in their vehicles to triangulate signals. I imagine it's not much different to track HAMs and since they fall under the FCC for licensing...

Yeah, I know. I was very good about signing the transmitter log after checking. But in 5 years of broadcasting I never once saw an FCC guy walk into the station.

I did, that's how I know. The station owner came barreling in one day with a wild look in his eye, said he had just seen a car with a government license plate and antennas all over it. The car was going down the road a ways, stopping, then turning around (triangulating). He ran around checking the logs, made sure our license was within arm's reach then paced the lobby until he saw the guy pull up.

The boss was a bullshitter from waaaaay back, the FCC agent seemed to be as well. They got along extremely well but I'll never forget seeing him damned near shite himself when he realized the FCC was in the area.

The Federal Government doesn’t care about 35 dollars.

They do want a list of all the HAM operators though.

Don’t be on that list.

Here's one. Remember the song 'All Right Now' by Free? It was a rock hit around 1970 and I still hear it on classic formats. A woman bitched to the FCC that it contained profanity: 'Let's move before they raise the fricking rent.'
One of our DJs took it in the production studio and dubbed his own voice at the moment of 'fricking' and changed it to 'parking.' The manager let us play it because now he had cover.
