The case centered on financial statements that Trump submitted to lenders to help him acquire hundreds of millions of dollars in financing that he used to expand his portfolio of hotels and golf resorts. Trump borrowed the money at bargain rates after promising to maintain a net worth of at least $2.5 billion.
Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James sued Trump in 2022, alleging that Trump and his finance team systematically inflated the value of Manhattan skyscrapers, his Palm Beach estate and other assets by billions of dollars to stay in compliance with lenders.
His finance team, she alleged, buried low appraisals, failed to factor in land-use restrictions, misrepresented his control over cash holdings and relied on misleading investment metrics. Most flagrantly, she alleged, he exaggerated the value of his Trump Tower triplex penthouse in Manhattan by more than $200 million, in part by misstating its size by a factor of three.
