Thatcher is as good of a candidate to start Friday nights as any we have on the team currently IMO. I'm not saying Jay handed it to him undeserved at all, but perhaps using it as a way to get the best out of his team.

But I think you'd be fooling yourself if you don't think that he would make that offering for extremely talented players. Players like Paul Skenes, Jacob Berry and Tommy White didn't come to ride the bench, but yes they still had to work for it and earn it.

Thatcher has the competitiveness that you want in a Friday starter, but he has not outperformed every potential starter based off of the spring scrimmages that I've seen. Now obviously Jay sees a lot of things that we can't see so I'm also sure that this start is based on those things in addition to what we as fans are able to observe.

There’s a difference in telling a player “hey you’re better than anyone else we got. You’re going to start” and outright promising a spot that you brought in 2 other players to compete for.

I’m sure he told thatcher that he wants him to be a starter this year.

I highly doubt he promised Thatcher the Friday role.

I would almost guarantee that he told Thatcher, Luke and Gage all the same thing. “You have a chance to start on fridays next year.”
