I'd do similar in a heartbeat with just the two of us but I can't really fathom bringing my 5yo and 2yo on such a trip and maintaining my sanity. When they're older maybe.

Don't let age be a deterrent. We started road tripping with our 12 almost 13 year old when he was 18 months old. He's been across the country 6 or 7 times and to 35 of the 50 states and Washington DC. All but 1 state and DC were by car. Was it hard at times? Yes. But you just have to plan more frequent stops and things of interest to them.

Cool story, were were traveling west and stopped at a Wendy's in Salina, KS late one Sunday PM to get the kid a frosty (treats like that can buy you hours for a days travel time). While we were there, we noticed the "Steam museum" We pulled in as the guy was closing up shop. However, he told us we could walk the grounds as long as we liked. While we were doing that, he came out to us and gave us an handmade wooden tractor. One of the benefactors of the museum who was in his 80's made them for the gift shop there. He said he just wanted us to have it since we were from so far away. That was over 10 years ago and I'm sure than man that made it has passed. We still display it proudly in our family room.

That is just one of many memories we made during our cross country trips. While flying is faster, magic happens when you get behind the wheel of a car and start exploring.
