I think you can make an argument that the 2000s was the most diverse in genre.

Eminem, Jay-Z, Kanye West, among other for rap

The boy bands, Beyoncé, Britney Spears Lady Gaga, a ton of other for pop

Linkin Park, Green Day, MCR, Arctic Monkeys, and more for rock

Even EDM was blowing up with Daft Punk, M83, and MGMT

No, you can't. Anyone that thinks they can was not alive in the 1970s.

In the 1970s you could turn on a pop station and hear Blondie, Queen, Olivia Newton-John, Bee Gees, Glen Campbell, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Kiss, Bob Seger, Bellamy Brothers, Tony Orlando and Dawn, Three Dog Night, John Lennon, Stevie Wonder, and Charlie Rich. Mind you this was AM radio. I haven't even opened the can of madness that was FM radio in the 1970s.

In the 2000s you could turn on a pop station and hear Brittany Spears, Backstreet Boys, OutKast, and the Black Eyed Peas.

Comparing the music of the 1970s with the music of the 2000s is like comparing a Ferrari to a Prius.
