Moving players from one side of the ball to the other 1) sets them back in their progressions at their normal positions, 2) communicates to them that they are at the back of the line at their normal positions, and 3) encourages them to look elsewhere in the transfer portal.

Sometimes you find a Corey Webster or Marcus Spears.

Richard Sherman started college as a WR too. Made a big 4th down catch late in the USC/Stanford upset in 07. I think switching to corner turned out alright for him in college and the NFL. Gary Patterson while at TCU made a living converting RBs to edge rushers. It's not some unheard of phenomenon to switch from offense to defense in college.

This is a great point. Jack Hunt, Will Blackwell, Lyle Hitt and Carnell Stewart all started after moving positions too.

Correct its not a perfect science but it does sometimes work out to move a player from offense over to the defense or vise versa.
