My wife has a storage unit in Dallas that we've paid for probably 15 years. We've been in a cold war about it for a decade. It's like 250 bucks a month now.
Before we were married I went, unloaded and readied for an LTL carrier, like 10 hours of work. Carrier didn't show, I loaded it all back in, haven't been to the place since.

So you’ve spent $45000 on storing some stuff you haven’t needed for 15 years?
If you’d invested @ 7% annual return it would be worth ~$80k.

I've used one for my fishing gear when I lived in an apartment. Also housed my kayak at the time.
