When I lived in Stillwater, OK working 1st job after LaTech I lived in some new apartments just west of town surrounded by grassy fields.
One cold weather am as I headed to work I was like 30 seconds behind a pickup from the same complex. As he started up the little hill past the intersection I saw a “cat” fall out of his engine compartment. As I passed the spot I realized that was no cat.
Imagine a cold am, heading to work/breakfast, engine not even warm so defrost/heat on full… next thing you know the cabin is full of skunk!
Yea, I saw the windows open and the truck sped up to escape the aroma.

Skunks are mainly nocturnal with horrible eyesight. It's a recipe for road kill...

Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
And it's stinkin' to high heaven

On our last trip to Kentucky last year, I notices a higher than normal amount of road kill. Its not just normal possums and raccoons on the side of the road, i dont know what they eat up there, but those things make a mess all over the road for a hundred feet. Its like they explode when hit.

I don't think I've ever hit a skunk. More than a few squirrels, a couple of cats and, unfortunately, a dog chose to commit suicide by car in front of me, but no skunks, possums or armadillos yet.
I've had close calls with possums and armadillos, but I can't recall even a near miss with a skunk.

Skunk lightly sprayed the inside of our garage last year. The cats lived in the garage. Took 10 months for the cats to move back in.

Fun fact, skunks are closer related to dogs than they are cats. No idea why they call them pole cats.

“ Crossin' the highway late last night
He shoulda looked left and he shoulda looked right
He didn't see the station wagon car
The skunk got squashed and there you are
You got your
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Stinkin' to high heaven”

It does feel like we have an inordinate amount of dead skunks on the roads here.
