I was thinking more of if I needed to cancel the trip for some reason. Work, sickness, etc.

Sounds like you want a refundable ticket? Southwest tics are convertible to credit at no charge.

I never buy insurance for hospital:sickness so can’t weigh in there except to say that doesn’t really sound like what you want.

I’ve canceled both Southwest and Delta flights before (Delta four days before a flight and Southwest the day before the flight) and got credit to use on a later flight. You usually have to use the credit within a year.
