My natural inclination is to believe the opposite. Like, if a guy got fired for insubordination or smoking dope, I would assume that doesn't really say anything about how good he is. I would try to figure out how good he is, and then decide if I could deal with a pot-smoker or a hothead in the job I was hiring for.

If a guy gets let go because of some mass layoff, I'd just figure he was a low performer who wasn't really important to the company. He held on for a while by not breaking any rules, but he never did much to make himself indispensable or even stand out. That's the sort of person I've seen let go in those mass layoff events
