I think the X Files probably overstayed its cultural welcome by some years. It did have decent episodes lightly sprinkled in the last few seasons, but it could have done without them and ended around season 7ish.

It was perfect in the original format, with 2 legit humans, one of whom wants to believe, investigating shite that doesn't make sense. Leave the mystery, don't fill in the blanks.
MASH- it was okay with Potter and Winchester, but it still lingered on a few seasons too long.
