Blank’s inability to hire someone who is currently a head coach is perplexing. I don’t think most want to work for him so he has to go the assistant route.

Not really. Blank wants a yes man who is willing to kiss Rich McKay's arse. Blank makes his coaches do film study with him every week. No coach with any real options is going to choose to work for that idiot.

The NFL makes it highly undesirable to hire a sitting HC from another team. You'd have to trade for them, which means give the other team good draft picks.
They have created the system they have ... Interview a bunch of OCs/DCs, make sure there are 2 minority candidates in there, then decide if you'll go for the first time HC or the retread HC. Seems like about half the time it's the latter.
The NFL folks I know are convinced that college coaches almost always fail in the NFL. Harbaugh is the exception. I think that thinking leaves off a pool of worthy candidates, but oh well.
