Jack Burke Jr., the oldest living Masters champion who staged the greatest comeback ever at Augusta National for one of his two majors, died Friday morning in Houston. He was 100.
Burke, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, also won the PGA Championship and was equally skilled as a teacher. He built the fabled Champions Golf Club in Houston and delivered lessons along with a dose of homespun wisdom.
His passing was confirmed by Steve Timms, the CEO and president of the Houston Golf Association who spoke with Burke’s wife.
A native Texan and World War II veteran, Burke won the PGA Championship and Masters in 1956. The last of his 16 career titles on the PGA Tour came in 1963, but his career was far from over.
He joined another Masters champion, Jimmy Demaret, to found Champions Golf Club in 1957, a club built specifically for good players. It went on to host the Ryder Cup in 1967, the U.S. Open in 1969 and the Tour Championship for three years, the first time in 1999 when Tiger Woods won. Burke and Woods share a locker in the champions room at Augusta National.

Myself and four buddies were teeing off on a Saturday morning. Myself and another guy who had played golf AND wrestled at Nebraska were guests. This guy was 5'8" solid muscle. He would almost come out of his shoes hitting a driver. Its a long arse wide open shot on #1 and he laces one 300+ (early days of metal woods) and Mr Burke, who had ambled over and watched us tee off, tells the dude "If you would stay on the ground, you could play this game".
Guy dials it back a notch and shoots 70 for the day, his lowest round in months. We are having drinks in the mens locker room and Mr. Burke comes over and says, "Heard you had a nice round, I guess you listen well." and comped our drinks.
Dude was a baller. He and Jimmy Demaret started Champions with their own money, which wasnt an easy thing to do in 1957.

Got his black belt at 78. Real man.
Played in champions cup 7 years in a row and he always met us on range and putting green with pointers. Legend. And always take your hat off.

His modest office was between the walk from the dining room to men’s room, door always open. Tempted many times to stop at the doorway and scope out his golf paraphernalia but was afraid he’d catch me.
They don’t make ‘em like him anymore.
R.I.P. Mr Burke great man.

From ESPN article about his death…”Why did golf give us 34 rules when God only gave us 10 commandments?" he said over dinner at his home in Houston in 2000, one of endless examples of a sharp wit always grounded in common sense.
