Best I've seen were Jack Russell Terriers, drive out the roof and mean as heck. They would go nuts if they bayed one alive.
Another factor I've seen is the size of the dog, if a small dog the deer will not run and stay bayed to fight. Allowing an easy kill shot in a thicket.
