re: What’s the end goal for parents who put their kids into competitive dance?

For my daughter and us, I think it was mostly enjoyment. Travel a little and compete with friends.
She quit competitive dance to focus on ballet before high school though. She ended up a company member of our local ballet, paid once she hit 18. Quit after a few years at LSU.
We had a deal with her regarding dance in general, keep your grades up and you can keep dancing. She finished HS with a 4.0 and graduated from LSU in dietetics with a 4.1. Currently pursuing her master's at Fran U. We think her desire to dance and our insistence that her grades not drop meant she couldn't be too involved in less desirable extracurriculars in HS and probably kept her a bit more grounded than a lot of other kids.

They have a desire to spend 6 hours of their Saturday watching costume changes... then another 3 hours watching the awards be handed out for those costume changes.

The end goal is obviously to become the Lord of the Dance.

To attract football players in college??? That's my only guess.

I mean...both are awful...but dance is more awful. Baseball at least your outside and they just play. I went to one of my sisters things and it was hours inside an auditorium...the actual dancing is secondary to the constant parade of girls up and down the aisle screaming about not having the right bow or gloves

Honest answer, at least for my family, the end goal is the thing itself. My nine year old dances at some studio or other here in Mandeville. I have no idea if it's "competitive" or not, or what the difference is, but she goes because she has fun there and likes to dance. The day she is bored with it and wants to try something new, well, I guess that's when she stops dancing. She does swim team and chorus as well because she enjoys them, and from my perspective as her dad, that's the end goal.

Don't think I've ever seen a dance/cheer team not win a "national championship."

I mean it's not REALLY for the audience. My daughter's dance team or group or whatever does these too. Yeah, they're dreadfully boring, but it's not for me. It's for my daughter to get up there and do something she likes and conquer her stage fright and get dressed up and have me make a big deal out of it and bring her flowers and take her to dinner and make her feel special. I don't have boys, but I'm sure there's a masculine version of that watching a nine year old son get decked out like his favorite MLB player and go out and compete or play or whatever. It's boring as hell to watch, but who cares.
I mean did you really think it's supposed to be super entertaining?

What’s the goal of competitive dance?
To win shite...

Can you do that professionally? In college?
You seriously don't know this answer?
I will say, I do have a daughter that currently competes in dance.. and did start at age 8.. We've never once pushed her to do it.. If your kid truly loves something you'll never need to push them.

No doubt man...totally get that. Was being humorous but it meant alot to my sister at the time...hence why I sat there that whole fricking time lol

It's brutally boring though, you're right about that. I read a book on my Kindle until my daughter is up and my wife nudges me to watch. Even then I can't tell which one is mine half the time haha

Basically this. That lifestyle leads to cliquey/bitchy personalities. It doesn't start out that way but it sure eneds up that way.
