The field of play is the offense's field. The only part of the field that belongs to the defense is the end zone they are defending. So if you lose the ball there, in the defense's part of the field, it is their ball.

The goal is to get the ball into the defense's area (the end zone).

It's not that complicated.

That's not technically true. There are no offensive and defensive parts of the field that "belong" to those groups. There's the field.

They didn't lose the ball there, they lost the ball through there.
