You are "storing" an expensive car for someone you don't know. You're not in the business of storing vehicles, right?

Anything in writing?

What if something happens to the car while it's in your possession?

You're driving it sometimes. Proof that it's properly insured? Does your homeowner's policy cover any damages to a vehicle you are storing on your property that you don't own?

Are you sure he's the sole owner of the vehicle?

I suggest you tell him to come get the vehicle asap.

Insurance company has been called. All good there
Registration is in his name and valid
Have both his phone numbers and a written letter of consent

Talked to a couple cops and they told me there is nothing illegal about me driving it.

Searched car and nothing out of the ordinary there

All of this and so much more. I’m sure even if his home owners covers other cars, and even if his personal insurance covers him in other vehicles, it sounds like he’s holding it as a business transaction in which case there’s a better than not chance his insurances would tell him he’s fricked.

Does the OP have the title to it? I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that some out of state loan shark has claim to it.

Suppose everything is straight with the car - why the urgency to get a membership when he’s not even going to be in town to use it? Why can’t he just wait until he’s sufficiently fluid to be able to write a check? This is a shady situation and if this guy is this comfortable with just dropping it on the OP then there’s a good chance he’s the try of guy that’s going to have more shady shite to involve the OP with in the future.
