Free States were more than able to present a bill to Congress to abolish slavery. We had unconstitutional banks and unconstitutional tariffs, so why not just make a law banning it?
Probably trying to avoid a war. There was no compromise. Slave states wanted to preserve and extend slavery and it was non-negotiable.

The Confederate Constitution allowed for States to outlaw slavery.
The North wanted States admitted to the Union to be free States because they felt that would give the upper hand in Congress, the South wanted States to be able to hold slaves if that was what they chose because they felt more slave States would give them power in Congress.
eta: to understand the nuances of the War for Southern Independence, you must understand the cultural differences between the North and the South and how it has been there since before the American War for Independence.
The North threatened to secede several times before the South did, and not once was it for slavery. It was always for money and power.

This isn’t true. Parts of Louisiana wanted union control and the war to be over. You act as if every person in every slave state wanted slavery to continue. You are so wrong.
What’s funny about Louisiana is it was New Orleans that rejected the union.

Honestly, I believe a more accurate way to put it would be:
Slave states wanted to preserve and extend industry (cotton), therefore, slavery (workers) was non-negotiable.
