There is DEF fluid on the smaller diesels. The small Duramax is actually really good. It’s a GM-Isuzu design that was originally intended for cab over trucks. So packaging it for a full sized truck was a headache. It’s ultimately a good product though, and far quieter than diesels of even the recent past under most circumstances (you can still hear the diesel clatter at idle and startup though).

30+ MPG in the pickups or a Suburban with the 3.0L diesel is entirely possible when not towing.
