Nonsense. They set the salary to keep the employee rather than going down to the street to a different hospital for $2.00 an hour. Salaries are not arbitrary and HR departments spend a good bit of their time doing salary surveys and comparing benefits and 401k plans, insurance and the like. Believe it or not, hospitals would like to have a good clinical workforce. Did you know that a Medicare patient is paid based on DRG for a certain diagnosis with certain modifiers? If a patient comes in with uncomplicated pneumonia and the DRG pays for 2 days (based on your cost report from prior years) and your incompetent staff gets the patient out in 5 days, your lose. Quality staff gets them out in 1 day, you win.

If "market forces" (aka care quality) drove healthcare expenses, you'd be on to something. But healthcare reimbursement is more or less socialized. As such, market forces are less industry relevant.

E.g., Reimbursement per procedure is the same for the worst surgeons as it is for the country's best. In fact, as expensive corrective procedures often accompany the former, and reimbursement is set per encounter, the best surgeons, internists, etc are sometimes compensated less for care in our system.

None of that matters when these poor nurses can get paid a whole dollar more thanks to their union.

So avoid the union, don't give them raises, tell them they don't know how good they have it and that money would be better in the pockets of management to spend?

Can we agree that if you cannot afford to give raises to the nurses, then the people in management should not give themselves one either.

I love all this white knighting for hospital administration, even going as far as calling people commies.

Yet, you are defending administrators, who not long ago did something that was actually very "communist" when they forced workers who mind you most had actual medical knowledge, into taking an experimental vaccine.

If you guys want to discuss management and healthcare economics then go for it. This was about unions. Nobody is defending the fricked up system it is, most of us are still discussing the union aspect which is the OP.
