If the movie is 2 hours and let's assume an average 300 page book, they cut about half the book out minimum.

A lot of the imagery that is descriptive in a book can be immediately seen on screen though.
Most movies don't follow the book as closely as they should though. I think it would be beneficial if the author of the book worked closely with the director of the movie. I'm not sure how often that happens.
