Denny Laine, the English singer/songwriter and co-founder of both The Moody Blues and Wings, has passed away at the age of 79.

quote:

Laine remained a member of the Moody Blues from 1964-66, and co-founded Wings with Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney and Denny Seiwell in 1971, playing in the band until its dissolution in 1981. For his accomplishments with the Moody Blues, Laine was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.

good enough for paul mccartney, good enough for me. coincidentally, "band on the run" (paul/linda/denny) was released in the US 50 years ago today.

for a great look at denny and his prodigious talent, watch the 1976 concert film "rockshow" chronicling the wings over america tour

Sad to hear it.

He was always ready and willing to sing.

So sad.

One of Paul's casualties that ended up on the other side of a burnt bridge.

RIP

Mull of Kintyre and Go Now are classics.

It's unbelievable how big this song was. I think it might still be the biggest UK single of all time.

Great tune

Glen Campbell did a beautiful version of it also.

paul

quote:

“I have many fond memories of my time with Denny,” he wrote, “from the early days when the Beatles toured with the Moody Blues. Our two bands had a lot of respect for each other and a lot of fun together. Denny joined Wings at the outset. He was an outstanding vocalist and guitar player .... We had drifted apart but in recent years managed to reestablish our friendship and share memories of our times together. “Denny was a great talent with a fine sense of humour and was always ready to help other people. He will be missed by all his fans and remembered with great fondness by his friends.”

Devil's Advocate: once saw an interview w/drummer Bev Bevan (The Move/ELO) who was in an early band w/Laine. BB claimed DL was a total egomaniac who considered himself another Elvis & treated his bandmates like shite.

As for me, thinking about DL today, I can only say...

From his wife:

quote:

My darling husband passed away peacefully early this morning. I was at his bedside, holding his hand as I played his favorite Christmas songs for him. He’s been singing Christmas songs the past few weeks and I continued to play Christmas songs while he’s been in ICU on a ventilator this past week.

He and I both believed he would overcome his health setbacks and return to the rehabilitation center and eventually home. Unfortunately, his lung disease, Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), is unpredictable and aggressive; each infection weakened and damaged his lungs. He fought everyday. He was so strong and brave, never complained. All he wanted was to be home with me and his pet kitty, Charley, playing his gypsy guitar. Denny was so very thankful to all of you who sent him so much love, support and the many kind words during these past few months of his health crisis-it brought him to tears.

I thank you all for sending both of us love and support. It was my absolute honor and privilege to not only be his wife, but to care for him during his illness and vulnerability. Thank you to Dennys surgeons, doctors, specialists, physical therapists and nurses at Naples Hospital for working so hard to help him. Thank you for your compassion and support for me during these past several emotional months.

My world will never be the same. Denny was an amazingly wonderful person, so loving and sweet to me. He made my days colorful, fun and full of life-just like him. Thank you sweetie for loving me, for all the laughter, friendship, fun and for asking me to be your wife. I will love you forever ?? Please give Denny’s friends and family the time and privacy needed as we grieve our loss. ?? Much love, Elizabeth Hines

It’s the #4 all time UK single now.

It was the best selling when it was released.

Now Behind

1. “Candle in the Wind ‘97” Elton John
2. “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” Band Aid
3. “Bohemian Rhapsody” Queen

Godspeed Denny….

A HS classmate at the time of that tour, worked on the lighting crew. He died the summer following our jr year of hs, when the 18 wheeler he was riding in during the tour, crashed.
