Lots of good maker advice, but pause and consider traditions. Gifting a knife is seen as very risky and may sever a relationship. Never give a knife...always sell knives for a penny. Tape a penny to the knife and then take it as the purchase price.
This was the tradition in my West Tn childhood.

Wusthof Classic. Proven, reasonably affordable, and high-quality knives that will last forever if you take care of them. They sharpen easily. We’ve had ours for over 15 years and we use them daily. They still look and function as if they were purchased last week.
This is a good starting set that can be expanded as needed…

Traditions can be odd, but this is crazy talk. If a friend or family member wanted to add a nice knife to my kitchen that matched my set/brand, I’d be grateful.

6 piece Wusthof set for $280
Can't say I'm a big fan of the handle on the Wusthof Classic series, but that is a good deal. I bought a similar set of their Grand Prix series about 25 years ago for a couple hundred bucks and have never regretted it. I've added a few knives to the set but I don't think I'll ever need to replace it. It will last longer than I do. Great knives for the price.

I have a knife set similar to that one and I'm not a fan of the handle either. Still a great set for the price

So you need a good chef knife and a trimming knife.
A bread knife is also a good option

Chef knives to go is where a lot of the big-timers buy from, and they have price ranges for us regular folks.

Shun are nice. Some of the German brands can be too heavy in my opinion. If on a budget of any kind, look for Victorinox knives. I have some really expensive knives but use Victorinox on a daily basis.

Really like my Wusthof knives. Have a chef, santoku, pearing, and a 9" carving knife. They all hold an edge for a long time. Worth every penny.
